Freebees!

My favorite mornings are those that start with oats and laptop time (blogging) time. Oh, and cappuccino. Absolutely cannot forget the cappuccino.

And not any oats, bloggies...the best oats. Oats a la pumpkin butter! With Splenda brown sugar, turbinado, and pecans. Mmmmm! To DIE for!!!

What's your favorite way to start your morning?

Sadly, Lily's toe is hurt. She was playing with her sissy yesterday, though we're not sure what actually happened. Sweetie pie has been limping around looking all pathetic since it happened. She's going in to see the doggie doc this afternoon. Poor punkin...

Literally, she's looked like this since yesterday. Doesn't she just look...sad? And pathetic?
Count her chins..that always makes me smile.

Lunch today was Tuna Edamame Salad, light string cheese, a Nutridel cookie, and a can of Zevia. It was a really satisfying lunch -- one of the most satisfying I've had in a long time! High-five, self, for planning ahead and making that tuna salad last night!!

The wonderful people at The Healthy Baking Company sent me suncakes and Heart Thrive Meals-to-go. Not only are they adorable, but check this out...

One 2-ounce Heart Thrive contains...
~150-165 calories
~2 grams of fat
~32 grams of carbohydrate
~6 grams of fiber
~15 mg sodium
~6-7 grams of protein
~260 mg calcium

Ingredients in the Apricot Heart Thrive: Oats, unsulfured apricots, brown rice syrup, brown rice flour, soy protein concentrate, soy flour, inulin (chicory root extract), rice bran, natural fruit juice, dried plums, dried apples, dried pears, orange peel, calcium citrate, almond extract.

Facts: Vegan, wheat-free, dairy free, no preservatives, no GMO, low glycemic index

These Heart Thrives are GOOD! My only regret is that they're not lower in calories. Hence the minus. Would I recommend this product? ABSOLUTELY! The Heart Thrive was extremely filling, but I would need something more to call it a meal. Though, I do have the appetite of a heifer.

In nutrition and health news...

Will the Food Guide Pyramid eventually include weekend and holiday guidelines? Studies show that weekend eating habits are as terrible as at the holidays. Researchers at the University of Pittsburgh found that the quantity and quality of foods eaten during a meal over the course of the day differs considerably on weekends and and holidays [1]. If you're anything like me, that's not an understatement in the least.

Question: Do you think it's sensible to add holiday and weekend guidelines to the Food Guide Pyramid?

Have a good evening, all...and to all a goodnight! Just kidding...I'll be poking around reading blogs later!

  1. Your mornings are quite similar to mine!! blogging, oat eating, coffee drinking :)

I think the Food Guide pyramid SHOULD include some guidelines on holiday and weekend eating. I saw that today and thought it was fantastic. So many people do so well during the week, then fail on the weekends (I may be one of them...). I like the idea, a lot.

  2. Your poor puppy, how sad. I hope she is feeling better soon. As for the potential guidelines, it's just one more thing to confuse people, but I think it is needed. I hope it is done in a way that is easy to follow and easy to teach. We can barely get people to follow or even look at the guidelines now, so I think we wtill need to focus on the everyday guidelines. Then emphasize that every day should be treated the same. All things in moderation.

  5. I think that it would be a mistake to add in weekends and holidays. By doing so they imply that you "should" eat differently and are expected to do so. Wrong in my weight maintenance for this long book!!

  6. Thanks for stopping by my blog.

Even though it would be nice to add holiday/weekend guide to the food pyramid, I also think it would make things even more relaxed then they are. Personally as it is on holidays and some weekend I don't stick to the food pyramid, now if you make it more relaxed then it would be a disaster... did I understand your question right?

  7. I am making an effort to do the blog and nice brekkie in the morning, but I just seem to be a night owl. I mean I got in bed before 8 and here I am at 10:40 reading away!! I hope your puppy feels better soon!

  8. The best mornings start with oatmeal...Unless I'm really hungry, and then they start with a huge plate of pancakes or an omelet.

I don't think the food pyramid should add holiday/weekend guidlines, because essentially diet should not change on the weekends/holidays. Although, I'm guilty myself of being much more relaxed on what and how much I eat on the weekends.

  12. I hope your puppy gets better!

I recently read that article about holiday/weekend eating. I know this is one thing I struggle with even as an RD. If I do, then many other people must. I think it would be interesting if there were more of a guideline set regarding this.

  13. I never seem to have enough time in the mornings, but I always enjoy a nice bowl of oats :)
mmm those suncakes look great and I like the calcium in them :)
I can relate to the holiday/weekend eating at times, and I don't think that would be a bad idea at all. I tend to have a drink or two and that's what gets me :)
How's the holiday shopping going? I still a lot to do! Hope you have a great holiday!
